Listening Skills For Beginning English Learners (three hours)
This
session explores several approaches to teaching listening skills. Techniques presented include total physical response, hands-on
vocabulary learning, and ways to learn with audiotapes, videotapes, and computers.

Applied Grammar
(three hours)
Help your students to not only learn but also automatically apply rules of English grammar. This
session includes fun and effective ways to present and practice the 19 auxiliary verbs that are the key to producing correct,
coherent English sentences. It also includes ways to practice appropriate pronoun cases and adjective-noun order. This presentation
is for teachers of beginning and intermediate English language learners.

Teaching Numbers and Math functions (90 minues)
Math
is a universal language, so math skills will automatically transfer to English. Math-related vocabulary, however, will not.
This session will explore techniques to teach mathematics vocabulary. Techniques covered will include TPR math applications,
mental math, number dictations, and ways to help beginning English language learners use their knowledge of place value to
quickly learn to recognize even very large numbers in English. This session is for ESL and math teachers whose classes include
beginning English language learners.

English Phonics
for Literate English Learners ( Three hours)
This session is for teachers who will be teaching reading
to English language learners who are already literate in their primary language. It will show which sounds and which
spelling conventions will likely be difficult for these students and suggest ways to teach them.

Controlled Conversation (90 minutes)
For teachers
with volunteers to help with their classes, controlled conversation is a wonderful way to teach spoken English. After reading
selections from A Clockwork Orange, participants will practice controlled conversaton using Nadsat, the Russian-like slang
spoken by the narrator.

Using Dictionaries in the ESL and the Content Classrooms (90
minutes)
This session explores ways to use unilingual, bilingual, picture, and electronic dictionaries in the ESL,
bilingual, and content classroom. The presenter will discuss the advantages, disadvantages, and appropriate uses of each.
Electronic dictionaries to be discussed include handhelds like those made by Franklin Electronic Publishers and software
dictionaries for PCs and PDAs.

English Language Learners in the Content Classroom (three
hours)
This session will explore ways to use ESL techniques to help English language learners in the mainstream or
in sheltered English content classes. This presentation is for math, science and social studies teachers whose classes include
English language learners.
