currently teaches ESL at Rice University in Houston, trains teachers for Oxford Seminars, and serves as a cross-cultural
trainer for Cartus Corporation. Before his semi-retirement, he taught ESL in Minnesota, Mexico, Japan, the
Houston area, and the lower Rio Grande Valley. He has taught Spanish, as well as special education, language arts, and
social studies in classes that included both English language learners and native speakers of English.
He has written
articles and columns for several publications, including Harper's Magazine, Reason Magazine, Teacher Magazine, Principal
Magazine, Education Week, Education News, and Intellectual Capital. He has published two books, Teaching English Language Learners K-12 , which was released by Corwin Press in Februrary, 2004 and Standing and Delivering:
What the Movie Didn't Tell, which was released by Rowman & Littlefield in 2010.
Jesness lives in
League City, Texas with his wife, three daughters, and a few animals.
